What to wear in Morocco? This is the first question that comes to mind when planning a vacation in Morocco.

Packing is hard enough for a vacation in a culture where you are completely comfortable. It gets even more challenging when you go to another country with a culture that is more conservative than you are used to.

So, if you're going through your closet in preparation for your big Morocco adventure and wondering what you can pack and what you can leave at home, keep the two Ms in mind: modern and modest.

Presented in this article is a comprehensive list of items to pack before setting out to Morocco and other packing advice.

Let’s get started.

What to Wear in Morocco

The official religion of Morocco is Islam; therefore, people tend to be very modest, though not as conservative as many Islamic nations.

Moroccans are very kind, hospitable, welcoming of tourists, and very stylish themselves. You won’t be required by any means to conform to these cultural norms or religious ideas of modesty, but we do advise our clients to be respectful of the culture.

What to Wear in Morocco as a Female Traveler

I advise female travelers, especially those traveling alone, to be more conservative. This advice is not meant to be restrictive but to help you fit into your surroundings, draw less attention, and have a more immersive journey.

The looser your clothes are, the better. Packing a couple of tunics and long-sleeved shirts that you can slip over the top of your outfits is also a good idea for easy layering, not only for modesty’s sake but also to protect against the heat.

For visits to churches and mosques, it’s recommended to wear clothing that covers from ankle to elbow, as well as the decolletage and hair. Don’t worry if you have a few stray strands hanging out beneath the head scarf. It’s more about being seen to make the effort.

What to Pack for Morocco: What luggage to choose for your Morocco trip

Most travelers use a small, wheeled suitcase, as on most trips they may be required to carry their own luggage, but the type of luggage most suitable will vary depending on the length of your Morocco trip.

I advise you to choose luggage for your trip to Morocco that is easy to recognize and preferably keep its weight under 23 kilos (or your airline restrictions).

You may also consider bringing a daypack or bag to use during the day for water and a camera.
